“What is the best way to feed my Lory? I was told they can have pellets or all dry powder food.”
Answer: Lories require a high-moisture diet. Because their digestive system is different from other parrot species. Lories have a short digestive tract, so they metabolize food rather quickly. In nature, they primarily feed on nectar, vegetable matter, pollen, grubs, and fruit. A wet nectar diet, healthy fruits (low iron/vitamin C), will allow them to process and digest food easier. Some sweet-tasting vegetables such as butternut squash, carrot, and bell pepper can be implemented. These are also rich in beta carotene and natural Vitamin A, which the birds require to look good! Pelleted diets or all dry powder diets can cause many health problems down the road such as impaction or liver and kidney damage. Don’t fall for the marketing gimmicks given by other companies. Cutting corners for “convenience” should never be a reason to do so.
“What product should I choose? The Lory Maintenance Diet, or the Lory Cuisine Diet?
Answer: You can choose both! Our Lory Maintenance Diet is your bird’s daily staple diet. Our Lory Cuisine formula is an enrichment-based diet, with more diverse ingredients. The Lory Cuisine Diet includes coconut palm sugar, fruit bits, leaf and stem bits, and flower petals. We recommend alternating between both formulas to keep your bird(s) engaged in foraging activity. Or, you can simply implement our Lory Cuisine Diet on days you do not want to implement fresh fruit.
“ You use pea protein in your formulas. I was told this was bad and causes hemochromatosis from high iron.”
Answer: This is a false statement. The concern rises from the iron content found in pea protein. While high in iron, we carefully selected the amount used in our formulas to maintain safe iron levels. Pea protein has many health benefits: promotes muscle growth, healthy skin and feathers, vitamins/minerals, is easily digestible, and prevents blood sugar spikes. Other Lory food companies have over 100-125 PPM iron content in their food. Our recent 2025 lab testing showed 71-79 PPM in our formulas. You can find our full analysis on our product pages.
“ Does the use of coconut palm sugar in your formulas contribute to deforestation?”
Answer: No! Our coconut palm sugar is environmentally sustainable and minimally processed. The palm sugar we use is harvested from the nectar of the coconut palm blossom. This is also known as “Nira” by locals in Indonesia where it is sourced by our brand. Our source uses regenerative agriculture to restore soils, and protects the natural environment. Many Lory species feed on the nectar “Nira” from coconut palm blossoms in the wild. It’s rich in amino acids, and other essential vitamins and minerals. Many believe it is a key ingredient when keeping/breeding Lories & Lorikeets.
“What is the difference between your wet mix (add water) formula and your “feed dry” formula?”
Answer: Nutritionally, both formulas are the same and they are both packaged in a powder form. The only difference between the two, is we use a thickening agent in our “add water”
Mix. This helps keep the contents from settling quickly to the bottom of the feeding dish when mixed with water. As previously stated, we recommend feeding wet nectar mix vs. dry food. Understand that wet mix needs changed frequently to prevent spoilage, so we recommend feeding your bird(s) in portions of what they will consume in 3-4 hrs. We still offer a dry powder formula for customers, but only recommend using it as a supplement or in conjunction with fruit for moisture. Clean drinking water should always be available when using dry powder.
“Can I feed wet nectar mix and dry powder at the same time?”
Answer: Although you can offer both to your bird(s), you’ll find that feeding both simultaneously will result in a lot of wasted product. This may be ideal should you be gone all day for work, however we recommend feeding roughly 1/2 a cup of dry powder in conjunction with chopped or whole fruit for moisture. Make sure clean drinking water is available. Once you return, you can mix up wet nectar mix for their last meal of the day. If you cannot feed wet nectar mix throughout the day, the birds should absolutely be getting it at minimum, once per day.
“How often should I feed fruit?”
Answer: Ideally you can offer fresh fruit to your birds daily, or sporadically. Fresh fruit is considered an enrichment item. Keeping the birds engaged and busy, mimics what they do in the wild, which is called “foraging”. On days you implement fruit, it can either be made up into a puree with our nectar formula, or a nectar meal replacement. To avoid wasted food, only feed fresh, whole/chopped fruit as a nectar meal replacement in the PM hours, after they have had their first nectar meal of the day in the AM hours. Lories by nature gorge on food first thing in the morning, rest mid day, and then forage and eat again before dusk.
